Gravestone Inscription

ERECTED
TO THE MEMORY OF
JOHN HALL
WHO WAS UPWARDS OF FORTY YEARS
SHIPMASTER
IN THE
NEWFOUNDLAND TRADE
HE DIED AT PAISLEY
XV11 AUGUST MDCCCXXXV11
AGED LXX YEARS

The grateful breeze and stormy seas
Have tost me to and fro
Till GOD’s Decree did summon me
To Harbour here below
My Anchor fast by death is cast
From every storm set free
And Hope prevail my swelling sail
Shall waft me LORD to thee
